Why do you want a pet?
Is it because the children are crying for a cat, and you want to pacify them? Is it because a friend just adopted a dog, and it looks like fun? Make sure that you and your family are prepared to make a serious, lifetime commitment to the animal you choose. We match your lifestyle and the pet that’s right for you. Answer the questions below to see if you are ready for a pet. Think about things that are important in your life now. Many pets live for years - 15 years is not uncommon — a pet that fits into your lifestyle today needs to fit in tomorrow.

A pet is a member of your family and you must consider carefully before you adopt a pet whether you are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to care for the animal responsibly for the rest of its life.

• How physically active are you — really?

• Do you want your pet to be a part of an active life-style? or a couch potato? Somewhere in-between?

• Can you afford a pet? Owning a pet requires a financial investment as well as an emotional one. Your pet will need food, annual vaccinations, toys, grooming supplies, regular veterinary treatment, flea & tick prevention, and much more. You also need to consider the expenses if your pet gets sick. The total annual cost for your pet may be more than $500 per year! Can you afford to give them the care necessary?

• Do you or any household member have allergies to pets?

• How settled is your life? Are you expecting major life-style changes over the next several years?

• Do you have much free time now?

• How much time do you have EVERY DAY to spend taking care of a pet (feeding, grooming, exercising, training and socializing)?

• Will there be someone at home to give the animal lots of attention and love?

• All pets need to live indoors and be part of the family — is your home appropriate for a pet?

• All pets make some kind of mess. Will your pet be given free range of your entire home or just certain sections? How happy would a pet be in this space?

• Can you have a pet where you live? Check your lease and be certain you have landlord approval before you bring Fido or Fluffy home. Never try to sneak a pet into a rental situation. Not only is this against Mobile SPCA policy, but you and your pet may find yourselves facing eviction.

• Do you travel frequently, or work late hours? Companion animals require constant care and cannot be ignored. Many animals require exercise and outdoor activity.

• Do you have the patience to deal with raising a puppy or kitten? Are you prepared to deal with potential behavior problems? Housetraining, barking, biting, digging, scratching on furniture, litterbox "accidents", spraying, and general misbehaving are just a few of the problems you might encounter. Are you patient enough, and willing to take the time to train your new companion to be a good pet citizen? The Mobile SPCA strongly recommends professional training to prevent and correct behavioral problems. Are you able to afford this type of financial, emotional, and time commitment?

• Whether you choose a purebred or mixed breed animal, you must learn about the breed itself. How a particular animal will act, look, and what it’s going to take to care for it are essential things to know in deciding whether this is the right pet for you. If it is a mixed breed, investigate each breed in the combination if known.

• Does everyone in your household agree with adopting a pet? Bringing a companion animal into your home requires the commitment and cooperation of the entire family. The Mobile SPCA discourages the practice of "surprising" someone with the gift of a living creature (Gift Certificates are an available alternative). Remember, too, that children cannot be considered the primary care-giver for the pet. Ultimately, it is the parent or adult guardian who must be responsible for the well-being of the animal.

THE MOBILE SPCA RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ANY ADOPTION FOR ANY REASON. ALL ADOPTIONS MAY BE SUBJECT TO A WAITING PERIOD OR HOME CHECK. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD TO ADOPT AND YOU MUST LIVE IN OUR ADOPTION AREA.
